Cucumis melo 'Pride of Wisconsin'

Common Name: Melon, Cantaloupe

A fabulous Midwest heirloom introduced in 1937 by the Robert Buist Company. Heavy yields of football-shaped 4-8 pound muskmelons. Hardshelled with firm sweet flesh. Great old-fashioned flavor associated with roadside stand melons. If you can only grow one melon and do not want to be disappointed, this is the variety to grow. 90-100 days.

Melon, Cantaloupe Growing and Maintenance Tips

Plant melons in soil with plenty of calcium to help prevent blossom-end rot from occurring. Melons do best in warm soil with plenty of nutrients.  Harvest melons by cutting them from the vine once they are ripe. There are some ways to help you figure out if melons are ripe and ready to pick. In general, look for a dull thumping noise when you tap on the melon, a sweet fragrance when smelling the rind, softening, and changes in color.
