in which the roots can grow and become strong and vital </li>
<li><strong> Fertilizer </strong> – supplements or "calories" for
good nutrition (annuals get "food" from the start; trees, shrubs and perennials strengthen their roots the first year and begin to receive their calories the 2nd year).</li>
<li><strong> Water</strong> – Who can live without water? Not too much,
and not too little! (The earth is made up of 70% water, after all!) </li>
<li><strong> Proper light conditions – </strong> The "neighborhood" whether
it's sun or shade or a combination of both so they can "stretch out" their
